A new brand ranking from YouGov puts numbers behind something most of us already suspected. ChatGPT takes the top spot with 33.7% of AI users saying it is the tool they like using most.
Gemini sits a distant second at 18.2%, still 15.5 points behind.
Copilot, Siri, and Claude round out the top five, each pulling low single digits by comparison.
The Numbers That Matter
Preference is not the same as awareness or trial. YouGov first asks which tools people would consider using, then asks which one they actually prefer. That second question is the one that counts, because it is the difference between a tool people have downloaded and a tool people reach for first.
Gemini is the one to watch. It gained 6.8 points in preference between February and July, the largest jump of any brand tracked, while ChatGPT actually dropped 5.9 points over the same window.
ChatGPT's lead is still commanding even after that drop, but the gap is narrowing in real time, and Google has been pushing Gemini harder across its own product ecosystem to make that happen.
Where the Split Really Shows Up
The most useful cut in this data is by worker type. ChatGPT preference runs 10.9 points higher among knowledge workers than among frontline and operational workers. Claude shows the same pattern at a smaller scale. Copilot's split is narrower, which tracks with its position inside Microsoft's desk-based productivity tools.
Voice assistants flip that pattern entirely. Siri preference runs 5.6 points higher among frontline and operational workers than knowledge workers. Alexa shows a similar tilt. Desk-based tools win with people who write, code, and research for a living. Voice-first tools win with people whose hands are busy doing something else.
That split has an obvious dealership parallel. Your sales floor, service lane, and parts counter run on frontline work, hands full, moving constantly, rarely sitting at a keyboard. Your F&I office, marketing team, and management staff run closer to knowledge work. If you are picking an AI tool for the whole store, that difference should shape where you put it, not just which brand has the best press.
Accuracy and Trust are Not the Same Category
ChatGPT also leads on perceived accuracy, with a net score of 30.3, meaning far more people associate it with correct information than incorrect. Gemini follows at 25.3.
Claude lands third at 14.4, but that number undersells it. Claude's overall brand awareness sits at just 59.3% compared to ChatGPT's 94.3%. Among people who actually know Claude exists, its accuracy score jumps to 24.3, nearly matching Gemini. A lot of Claude's ceiling right now looks like an awareness problem, not a trust problem.
Personal impact, meaning whether people feel the tool improves how they work, think, or feel, tells a slightly different story. ChatGPT and Gemini still lead, but Copilot moves ahead of Claude and Siri here, landing at 18.4. That is worth noting for any dealership already running Microsoft 365.
What This Means for Your Next Tool Decision
Before you sign a new AI vendor contract, ask what your team is already comfortable with. If your managers already default to ChatGPT on their own phones, fighting that preference with an unfamiliar enterprise tool creates friction you don't need. If your service advisors need something hands-free while walking the lane, a voice-first tool might beat a chat-based one regardless of what ranks higher in a national survey.
The best AI tool for your store is not necessarily the one winning the popularity contest. It is the one your specific team will actually use.
