After my bedtime…
Car shoppers want to know what a vehicle will cost them each month, at every credit level and on their own schedule. That puts payment information directly in the path of the AI tools shoppers are starting to use.
FlexPath DXP’s first Automotive Shopper Credit & Payment Behavior Study tracked identity-verified shoppers on participating dealership websites from January through September 2026. One caveat up front: FlexPath built the tools being measured, and the data come only from dealerships using them, so the findings describe that group of shoppers rather than all U.S. car buyers.
Do prime shoppers really shop by monthly payment?
Almost exactly as often as subprime shoppers do. Credit changed the question shoppers asked, but not whether they wanted a payment.
Behavior | Subprime | Prime + Super Prime |
|---|---|---|
Shopped inventory by monthly budget | 80% | 78% |
Prequalified for a specific vehicle | 30% | 44% |
Used general prequalification | 49% | 42% |
Stronger-credit shoppers also asked their payment question while browsing. 81% of their vehicle-specific prequalifications started on search results or vehicle detail pages, compared with 7.5% on a finance page.
When are shoppers looking for payment answers?
Across 16,680 payment-shopping sessions:
25.6% began between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m., dealer-local time
12.2% began between 9 p.m. and midnight, and 13.4% between midnight and 8 a.m.
11.4% began on a Sunday
That late-night share ranged from 20% to 31% across participating dealer websites. Prime and Super Prime shoppers were somewhat less likely to start late, at about one in five.
Where does AI fit into payment shopping?
FlexPath reports seeing ChatGPT and other AI-assistant referral signals in lead data from participating dealer websites. The volume is still too small to draw conclusions, but the report expects that as shoppers ask AI tools questions like “What can I get for $600 a month?”, inventory and payment information that AI systems can find will matter more.
The overnight shopper and the AI-assisted shopper are asking for the same thing: an accurate, personalized monthly number, right now. An AI assistant, whether it’s ChatGPT or a chatbot on your own site, can only surface payment answers your website actually provides. If personalized payments sit behind a “Get Approved” button on a finance page, the 11 p.m. shopper and the AI tool helping them may both move on before anyone at the store sees the lead.
How should dealers present payment information?
FlexPath draws a firm line between payment transparency and payment selling. Transparency means showing a verified shopper an accurate monthly cost alongside the price, APR, term, cash due and required disclosures. Payment selling steers a buyer toward a monthly number while obscuring those terms.
That line matters more as AI tools begin summarizing offers for shoppers. A clear, fully disclosed payment answer is easier for a shopper to trust, and easier for an AI system to repeat correctly.
